[Someday, one of the rich people who set up duel monsters tournaments is going to set it in a regular stadium with regular entry requirements and regular monetary prizes.]

[Today is not that day.]

[Setting a plot vital exclusive tournament on a massive submarine, so far down into the ocean that the only light comes from bioluminescent fish probably seemed exciting to whatever madman set this up. At the moment, it just seems mind-numbingly stupid. The backup power on this sub is only used to maintain the oxygen and the pressure moderators, not the lights or the heat or the automatic door locks. Really, there was a major oversight here, but what was the chance that the main power would get turned off?]

[Well, whatever the chance is supposed to be, it damn well happened. With Jaden and Chazz alone in the prep room, too, with no way out except the automatic doors. Before the battery on the comm system went out, Syrus had told them they were working to get everything working again, but it'd probably be a few hours.]

[It's been four hours now, and yeah, at first, the big problem was the soul-crushing darkness. There are no lights, and even if there had been windows, they're too far down for it to do shit. By now, though? It's very cold at the bottom of the ocean, and the submarine only holds onto heat for so long with almost nothing running. It's cold enough that it's sneaking into Jaden's bones, even with Chazz pressed against his side. Neither of them are wearing anything terribly warm, which seems stupid now.]

[It's starting to look like they might not get out of this after all. Jaden's laugh is uncomfortable and sounds so loud in the silence of their trapped room.]

Hey, if this was a movie, wouldn't this be the part where we say some embarrassing thing about ourselves right before the door popped open?

[In Chazz's plight to be a pro duelist, he doubts he'll ever have to deal with this sort of bullshit again. He says that a lot, promises himself that if it sounds like something Jaden would rush in to do, he probably shouldn't do it, but he always does it anyway. Something about wanting attention and taking on any challenge and blah blah blah, his excuse is that Jaden practically jumped into the submarine and what kind of friend would he be if he didn't go along to keep his idiot best friend out of trouble. Not that he's saying any of that out loud, of course, because what comes out of his mouth is a lot of "I will beat Jaden Yuki!" and "we're not friends" and so on. Usually, they have to depend on Jaden to fix everything, but this is out of Jaden's range of vaguely alien methods of doing anything, so they're stuck in a cold room in a submerged tank at the bottom of the goddamn ocean, and what Jaden is concerned about is "what if this was a movie".]

[They haven't spoken in a long time, Jaden probably ran out of things to say for a while, it happens, and Chazz was trying to conserve energy. His coat wasn't made for the cold, which seems really stupid now, but that's what it is and it's doing a shitty job at warming him up, even if he burritos himself in it. Chazz jumps when Jaden laughs and talks, the sudden sound just so loud in this pitch-black, lightless, almost soulless darkness. He's close and pressed to Jaden's side, and he knows better than to try to move away right now just because he's feeling ornery.]

Ugh, don't be stupid, if this was a movie I doubt you would be stuck down here and we wouldn't be depending on those other idiots to fix everything.

[It's...sort of a compliment, but Chazz prefers to state the facts and get the chit chat done and over with when he's, y'know, on the verge of dying. He doesn't depend on Jaden as much as their other friends do, but he recognizes that things just run right with him around and more in charge than he is right now. He recognizes a lot of things about Jaden that no one else seems to, and it's the one thing he's better at that he doesn't constantly brag about; Jaden doesn't need a guy spouting off how much he knows about him or that he's better at taking care of him than the others, and Chazz has known that for years.]

[If there was going to be anything embarrassing said, he's not sure what he'd pick to say because they might all turn into "I love you" and he'd never be able to take it back.]

[Chazz, honey, you need to explain why if you're telling someone that they wouldn't be the one in the dark room. Jaden laughs, missing the compliment entirely.]

Well, in the movie, there's usually at least one girl trapped. So I guess you're right.

[He goes a bit limp at this point, draping himself over Chazz's shoulder.]

I could pretend to be a girl.

[There's a pause, and then Jaden adopts a high pitched voice.]

Hi, I'm Jade, and I like-- . . .

[Another pause.]

What do girls like?

[A longer pause.]

Boys? Ballet? Kittens? Butterflies?

[A shorter pause.]

Except that I already like all those things. Except ballet. Ballet is boring.
