[Minako doesn't get SOS texts from Veser very often. In general, if things get bad at home, he'll just ask to spend the night at her place, or even just text her from outside her building if he really doesn't want to be at home. She doesn't know why he feels the need to do the second-- she knows he's just trying to keep her from saying no by already being there, because he needs her, but she'd never turn him away. One way or another, though, he never asks her to come get him, and she understands that, he wants to keep her as far away from his personal hell as possible.]

[Tonight, though, that's what she gets. This has only happened once before, and that time Veser's dad had broken his son's nose. Minako steals the keys to the shared van instead of walking like Veser does when he comes over, frantic to get to her boyfriend. The text had lacked details and she takes that to mean something bad.]

[She's even more nervous when she gets up close to his house and finds Veser sitting on the sidewalk, because things have to be bad if he's sitting out here instead of waiting for her inside. It's getting cold out, nearly snow weather.]

[She parks her car in front of his neighbor's house and runs to meet him, trying to avoid shining the car lights on either of them. She doesn't want to draw parental attention from inside the house. She keeps her voice down, but the worry comes across in spite of the volume as she drops to her knees by his side.]

[So, most people at school don't really pay attention to Ryou. Not even most of their group, who are supposed to be his friends. He's just so quiet he kinda fades into the background most of the time.]

[Honda, on the other hand? He pays attention. And recently, he's noticed that Ryou hasn't been bringing as much food to lunch. Yeah, maybe it's a bit of a mother hen thing to fret about, but he brought it up, and it turns out that Ryou's been putting off a grocery shopping trip. As a teenaged boy, Honda was immediately horrified by the idea of a house being almost out of food, and an after school shopping trip was arranged.]

Did you make a list?

[They're standing inside the store, and Honda has one of the handheld baskets. It's remarkably domestic, really, especially for a couple of teenagers, but he doesn't seem to find a problem with it.]

[Field trip day!!!!]

[Seriously, if Jaden could, he'd probably be wearing some stupid field trip themed hat, field trip themed bag and field trip themed shirt. His mother had gently reminded him that none of those things actually exist but here's 20 dollars to buy himself a souvenir from the Aquarium. Instead, he has his normal duel monsters themed backpack, no hat (and as per the norm, hair that his entire family had given up on), and a power rangers t-shirt. Ain't nobody going to top this fourth grade swag.]

[Mr. Crowler had assigned them into pairs, and as usual, solemnly refused to put Jaden with Syrus. Syrus was shy to the point of near silence, only talking to Jaden most days and trembling when called on, but he was also entirely too willing to follow Jaden into rule breaking adventures. They've been banned from partnering on anything as a result.]

[Instead, the buddy system has assigned Jaden to Chazz, a new student this year who had had some kind of incident at the private school on the other side of town and been transferred into Red Cliff Elementary, the public school. And Jaden is perfectly alright with this! Syrus is with mutual friend Chumley, an overweight boy who by all rights should be in the fifth grade, so he'll survive the day, and no matter what Chazz says, Jaden insists that they're friends.]

[They're getting off the bus now, and Jaden nearly knocks over two girls in front of him in his eagerness to get outside. He's not a big fan of vehicles, there's no room to run around. Once he's actually out there, though, he waits for Chazz to get off the bus, bouncing happily in place.]

C'mon, Chazz! There's gonna be sharks!!

[Chazz does not like his new school. He does not like it at all. He misses his old school with the fancy uniforms and good food and amongst all the other rich kids in the district. His brothers hardly had time for him as it was, but now they actively try to avoid him and he freaked out the first time he had to go on the school bus to get to school all by himself. So, yeah, he's not exactly the happiest kid nor is he the most pleasant.]

[Friends usually came to him, he never had to seek them out. But as he's learning from being in this new school, he doesn't want any of these losers as friends, so yeah he was content with being alone and isolating himself from all the other kids who were just so damn excited to get permission to write in pen (granted, with eraseable ink) for the first time. So seeing that nothing ever works out the way he wants it to, he had this messy-haired kid always trying to be his friend and telling everyone that they were really good friends and Chazz himself didn't make it any better since he followed him around anyway.]

[He pouted the whole trip to the aquarium and he's sure as hell pouting right now. No one knows him at this school, they don't respect him or try to offer him their lunch in exchange for some promise of friendship. He's not a prince anymore and he's not just handed anything and he hates it. So what if he's still rich, it seems to be useless for anything except inviting teasing for being "the rich kid," and that's nothing he wants.]

[As much as he wants attention, though, he was honestly hoping that if he stayed on the bus the teachers would forget about him and let him not go into the aquarium, but as it is they noticed and ushered him out as the last kid off the bus. And okay, fine, he'll deal with that, and there's no way that stupid kid Jaden would stand and wait for him--]

[Chazz glares when he sees that Jaden did, in fact, wait for him to get off the bus. He's not sure how or why this kid latched onto him, but he did and now he's stuck with him. He groans and indignantly pulls on the straps of his clearly-superior-to-Jaden's duel monsters backpack (his has dragons on it) to be clearly angry without lashing out again.]

So what? I've seen sharks before! Up close, too, close enough to touch them! Bet you've never done that.

[Neither have you, tiny Chazz.]

[Jaden set up his shifts at work so that he could be free today, because it's the day the local news station does a fluff piece on local duel monster tournaments. It's silly, but Chazz hasn't been on TV since the disowning fiasco a few months before their wedding, and Jaden knows he's secretly nervous about it.]

[He slept with his phone on vibrate and under his pillow so he could wake up early without waking Chazz up with him. He knows better than to try anything terribly complicated for breakfast, because the last thing his husband needs today is an explosion of Belgian waffle batter like last time. Instead, he makes bacon in the microwave, waffles in the toaster, pours a big glass of orange juice and balances the whole thing all the way down the hallway to their bedroom. Kuriboh follows him around through the whole deal, and Jaden rewards him with a tiny piece of bacon and a headpat.]

[Jaden opens their bedroom door with his back, having left the door cracked, and sets the whole tray on Chazz's bedside table.]

Good morning, honey!

[He's all flowers and sunshine this morning as he nudges his husband awake.]

[Big, comfortable beds are his thing. He's gone through great lengths to secure one for himself in his Slifer Red prison toolshed, so unlike any other Red student that is not the thing that sends up red flags as he regains consciousness. For one thing, he's being gently physically woken up, not abruptly by friends (99% of the time it is just Jaden) jumping onto his bed. He can also hear things (where the hell are his earplugs?), and the things he's hearing are definitely not the sounds of a room cram-packed with loud obnoxious duel spirits partying all night and into the morning. In fact, is that a dog making little barks somewhere? And he vaguely remembers being called "honey" by the Awakening Voice? Maybe?]

[Holy shit is that bacon he smells.]

[So even with all of the confusion surrounding this particular waking up process, from the peaceful quietness to the presence of actual food, Chazz wakes up more or less normally and welp that's definitely a bedside table with a tray of food and orange juice on it. He furrows his brows together, checks his ear just to make sure there aren't earplugs--seriously where did they go he spent money on those.]

O...kay...

[And honestly this is nothing compared to after he sits up and messes his hair around and finally notices he's in a completely different room than the one he fell asleep in. He's also less clothed. But he doesn't really process all the little details he takes in immediately because Jaden is there and smiling at him and--]

[Wait.]

[What?]

Jaden?! Why are you in here?

[And why does he look bigger and handsome more than cute and oh wow there goes his heart racing again what kind of fucked up dream is this?]

[Jaden laughs openly, grinning playfully at his husband. This isn't the first time he's woken up openly disoriented, but it's certainly still as entertaining as if it was.]

I live here, Chazzaroo. Something about a wedding, a bank loan and a moving van full of my crap.

[He leans in and gives him a quick kiss good morning.]

I made you breakfast! Without even blowing anything up this time!

[He makes a grand gesture at the food on the tray.]

Even bacon! No grease burns or anything!

[Holy shit Jaden is adorable, and the explosion of adoration inside Chazz leaves him silent and wide-eyed with severe romantic tension. He hangs onto every word, tries to piece it together and...what. What is this about weddings and banks and moving vans and weddings?]

What?

[And before he knows it there goes his first kiss okay. That was fast and uneventful but it was from Jaden and what the fuck is going on here?! This has to be some kind of dream or really in depth fantasy of his, because in what world is Jaden bringing him breakfast in bed and talking about weddings and laughing and grinning at him like that and kissing him holy what the fuck. He feels his face get hot, and he pushes himself back against the pillows and headboard.]

[He spends a good moment silently staring at Jaden, jaw slacked and very obviously confused-flustered. He glances to his side, sees that the sheets and pillows there are rumpled and evidently once holding another person in them. And, really, the only other person here is Jaden and he's talking about weddings and kissing him and kissing him and wow he really cannot get over this at all. Yeah, sure, he fantasizes about this sort of thing all the time, sometimes misses entire lessons by just watching Jaden and thinking of all the adorable things they could do together in a home with wedding rings and such.]

I-I--where are we...? Are we seriously-- [Chazz scrambles his hand from the sheets and, sure enough, there's a ring settled on The Finger on his left hand. He simultaneously feels his heart swell and anxiety rush up into his chest.] married...!

[Half of him wants to just soak up in all these dokis but the other half is fighting for some kind of logic here, there's no way this is a thing that's happening or will ever happen...]

[Okay, so, this is really disoriented, even for first thing in the morning. Usually when Chazz turns to him and asks if they're really married, it's either after Jaden drags him to do something really childishly stupid (in these cases, it's to imply 'we are not acting old enough to be married adults', although he always ends up humoring Jaden anyways), or when he's in one of those insanely romantic moods that take him periodically and he's just amazed that the marriage got to happen at all. Jaden is equally fond of both situations.]

[This is neither of them. Chazz looks deeply alarmed and actually sounds like he doesn't believe that they're married. And he's really red in the face, in a way that Jaden's rarely seen since their first year living together. His smile shifts slowly to something rather concerned, and he holds up his own left hand with the fingers spread, showing his own little gold band.]

Are you okay? We're home, sweetheart, of course we're married, what kind of dream did you just have?

[He sounds legitimately concerned, and climbs up onto the bed, putting a hand on Chazz's forehead to check for a fever.]

[Chazz's shitty grasp on reality maybe just got worse. Is this a dream or was duel academy all a dream, is he even in the right reality this time or is he dreaming about a dream in a dream and fuck this is. no. He'd almost take dealing with all the duel spirits in his room over this, just to give himself some ease about it. This isn't real, it can't be, but it feels real and it seems real and those are definitely real wedding rings they have.]

[Jaden also feels significantly more real when he crawls up and touches him and voices his concern and, okay, his hallucinations of Jaden are known to be really vivid and accurate, but they've never been able to touch him.]

I don't know.

[He groans and puts a hand over his face, not missing how it grazed briefly against Jaden's. This is too much, his chest is bubbling out of control with endearment and he's so in love with this idiot but this isn't where he's supposed to be and it's too good to be true. They're also apparently significantly older and he's not sure how he feels about suddenly being adult; that part hasn't really hit him yet farther than "I own a house with my handsome husband."]

We were just at school, like usual, and... [He sighs. He is currently faced with his dreams come true, and while he could try to get to the bottom of it and risk sounding insane he doesn't...want to. Maybe he can just live this out for however long it'll last--it's clearly a dream or some intense hallucination and it'll pass eventually. But he could also just find out what's going on, with all the shit happening around them at school as it is it might not be that hard, he can think and get to the bottom of it and find clues and solve this.]

Let's just say it was really vivid.

[This is already taking a turn for the "not thinking."]

[Jaden seems to relax when Chazz says the word 'school'. It's not the first time his husband's had weird dreams about them as teenagers, back when he was still trying to live up to his brothers' standards and both of them lived their lives around new packs of cards and weekend tournaments.]

The one where everyone's naked or the one where we go to Duel Monster school and the lizards talk to you?

[Even with the smell of bacon still in the room, Jaden has completely forgotten what he was doing when he woke his husband up, instead sliding in to cuddle into his side.]

I bet you're having stress dreams again.

[He presses his face into Chazz's cheek and sighs.]

You could'a told me you were freaked out about going back on tv. I knew you were nervous, but damn.

[He's content to nuzzle his husband's face and neck for a moment before playfully nipping his ear.]

Would morning sex cheer you up?

[...Oh okay so he still has stupid dreams here too, awesome. But oh hell he does not like the implication that he's getting from "duel monster school," as if they haven't gone there at all or something.]

Definitely Duel Monster school and... [lizards...the only thing he can think of are the ojama brothers and. well.] I wouldn't exactly call them lizards. [ALL OF THE DISTASTE.]

[Chazz sort of sighs with him, falling way too easily, although a bit awkwardly, into cuddling against Jaden. He loves how it feels to have him so close, pressed into him without hesitation. Though while he feels pretty great here, he's still taken aback and fairly embarrassed.]

Y-yeah, I didn't realize it, either.

[He honestly hasn't even thought about that being a thing again and hot damn that does make him nervous. He can really only imagine that the reasons are similar. And he's pretty content, himself, with cuddling and the nuzzling and kind of just chilling, it's calming him down a bit. Not a lot, but he's soaking this up while he can and]

[wait morning what]

Huh?

[Jaden snorts a laugh and gestures to the tank that contains the actual lizards.]

You're seriously still calling them freaks because their eyes are weird? Chazz, come on, they loooooove you~

[As if to demonstrate the word 'love', he rolls over onto Chazz's stomach, leaning forward to assault him a flurry of little kisses, and then imitate the little grabby motions Chazz's lizards make in his direction.]

Why won't you hold their little hands, Chazz? Why not?

[The sex discussion, however, is far more pressing that Chazz's lizards and their little hands.]

Too nervous? I could give you a BJ, if you'd be up for something a little lazier!

[Chazz honestly jumps a little when he looks over to where Jaden's pointing, because seriously what the fuck even there are three of them. And. Yeah. Okay, that's fine.]

Everything is weird about them!

[Those mitten hands and their eyes and their curly tails and yeah no they're weird as fuck. But okay hello kisses Chazz is just. a lobster of a dude. And when he smiles at Jaden being stupid at him instead of yelling, he's pretty convinced that each peck injected love into him or something because he just nothing but endeared by him right now. He's too busy smiling and chuckling to really respond to why he won't hold little lizard mitten hands, but oh right sex.]

[Chazz snaps back to flustered wide-eyed staring at Jaden, now more caught off guard than he was just before. God is it obvious that he's nervous, and what is a BJ? Jaden said he'd give it to him, whatever that even means, and Chazz cannot lie that a mix of the ear biting and Jaden being on top of him and the implications are arousing him, nor can he deny that he is infinitely nervous. He's never even kissed anyone before this, and he's never been this intimate and okay wow.]

Sure! That sounds...great!

[How fake knowing what the fuck sex is.]

I'm just a little out of it right now.

[Jaden grins playfully when Chazz insults the lizards again.]

Come on, even Kuriboh likes them! You can't disagree with the dog, Chazz. It's not possible.

[Mostly because the dog is basically a canine version of Chazz's husband. Puppy eyes are a household-wide weakness.]

[Chazz definitely seems off his game today, though. He looks legitimately flustered by the mention of a sex act Jaden's done three times in the past week, and there's nervous confusion in his expression and even his posture. Age had never really improved Chazz's ability to keep his feelings quiet, but he seems really messed up right now.]

[But sex usually does ground the two of them in reality. Jaden finds it a comforting gesture of 'hey, I'm here, remember?' and Chazz seems to like the assurance that yes, this is a real thing, and no, his family can't break them up, just like they couldn't when they were teenagers.]

[His tone is light but more understanding than cheerful, and the next kiss is gentle and lingering. He lets it melt into something less innocent and more sexual, but the affection is clear either way.]

[It doesn't last too long, though, because he has a neck to kiss down, and nothing can keep him from it, not even makeouts.]
