[Roxy Lalonde is Jane's best friend forever. They're first graders this year, and Jane is convinced of the permanence of their friendship, because anything that can survive the eternity of a whole summer can survive anything! She's already making plans to bring her bffsie some cupcakes tomorrow in celebration of this reunion, and almost trembling with the effort to keep it a secret. It's hard to be a little girl with something exciting to say. It's hard and nobody understands.]

[They've just been released from the lunch room to go outside and play, and Jane doesn't hesitate to grab Roxy's hand, beaming at her friend.]

Come on, if we hurry, we can have first dibs on the tire swing!

[Jane is practically Roxy's single form of constant human interaction, touch, and, god, affection. She's very young and is best at writing her and Jane's names (the other 18 letters, eh...), and she doesn't understand why she loves it so much when Jane grabs her hand or hugs her. Her mother doesn't nearly hug her enough, as she's always away on book tours or writing her next book or dealing with her editor, or--she just doesn't see her mom much. This summer was the best one because she spent a lot of time with Jane, and just yes. yes. that was the life.]

[Roxy doesn't hesitate for a second in returning the hand squeeze. She understands the rush, ohhhh, she understands the need to rush. The tire swing is a god-given gift unto the playground, and it was so damn perfect that the gods could only bless them with one (1) tire swing for an entire slew of excited children. Roxy loved getting dizzy on that thing, so dizzy she could barley walk or talk, and sometimes until she threw up but throwing up wasn't fun so she avoided that.]

Ohmigosh, Janey, we have to go now! I think I heard that boy with the funny hair saying he was gonna take it first!
